Materials: 20 oz WW yarn
Size J hook or size needed for gauge
Ch 145
1-Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sk 2 ch's 3 dc in next ch, (Ch 3, sk 3 chs, sc in next ch, sk 2 ch's, 3 dc in next ch) rep across, ch 1 turn
2-Sc in 1st dc, 3 dc in next sc, (Ch 3,sc in next ch 3 sp, 3 dc in next sc) rep across, ch 1, turn.
Rep row 2 until lapghan reaches 40 inches
Gauge: 3 rows equals 1 inch

Love the pattern. How many more chains would it take to make it an afghan? How many chains per pattern?

The picket fence afghan is a great pattern and produces a lovely look. I would, however, like to make a full size (say 45 inches wide). Has anyone figured out how many chains it takes to produce a full size afghan?

Hi, If you want to make it bigger say 54 inches wide just add half as many chain again as the pattern says. Then you can make it as long as you like.
So 45 inches you would add an extra quarter of the stitches at the beginning. The measurement said it was 36 inches, so half of 36 ins is 18 ins so you add that to the 36 ins and get 54 ins. If you want 45 ins you add an extra quarter of the stitches, so 36 ins plus 9 ins equals 45 ins etc. Hope this helps you and you can understand this method. For those asking about increasing and decreasing the size of this, it looks like the pattern is designed as 7x+5 for the initial chain.
The posted pattern uses 20 7-pattern repetitions plus 5 chains for the intro.
To change the size, simply choose any multiple of 7 and add five to it for your beginning chain - for example, if you wanted to make it half size, you would use 7*10 + 5, or 75 for your starting chain. Double size would be 285 for the starting chain.
I would estimate that 180 for a starting chain would be about right for 45" and 215 would be about right for 54".

It depends on how long you want it. Repeat the pattern u til you get to the desired length.
Looks like you used a solid color that went with the variegated color of your choice. Simple enough.

Having trouble when I come to end of row, to end row and turn. Can't remember how to end row and how many I chain an then start next row....
It would be nice if you stated how many rows of the main color you did and how many of the alternate color to do? Also how much yarn do we need for the 2 different colors? And what wight yarn was used in the item pictured? Questions I think that need to be answered so people can understand what we need in order for us to make this Afghan! Thank you and will be looking for the answers to my questions.
I believe that I am going to use stash colors. Will try and get two rows if each color. Thank you for your time and pattern. Maureen
If you count the rows it is 10 veriegated and 5 solid. Since it takes 20 ounces of yarn it would be about 14 ounces variegated and 7 of the solid.
If a pattern is required to be repeated, the instructions may use "...." or (...) to indicate that you are to repeat the information given between the two similar marks.

What does ”sc in next ch 3 sp” mean?
"sc in next ch 3 sp" means - single crochet in next chain 3 space
"sc in next ch 3 sp" means - single crochet in next chain 3 space.

I love this pattern. I made one years ago in a lapghan with no edge. . Just finished a babies size and am trying to create an edge. It would be awesome if the pattern could be amended with edging if possible. Any suggestions or beginning changes I can make to accommodate an even looking edge would be greatly appreciated.

There should be a 2 ch space from the previous row. You do a single crochet in the space. Just put the hook into the space like it's a stitch and do your sc. If that's not clear enough, search on YouTube sc in ch3 space. They're should be a video explaining how to do this.
