Rnd 1- Ch 4, 7 dc in 4th ch from hook, join in beg ch 4.
Rnd 2- Ch 3, dc in sm st, 2 dc in each dc around (16 dcs)
Rnd 3-Ch 4,dc in sm st (beg v-st made) V-st(dc, ch1, dc)in each dc around,join in 3rd ch of beg ch 4.
Rnd 4-Sl st into 1st ch 1 sp, ch 3 4 dc in sm sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, (5 dc in next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp) rep around, join in 3rd ch of beg ch 3.
Finish off. Weave in all ends

I don't use cotton yarn much. Is there a particular weight I should use?

You could try it in regular WW yarn.
